Or when guysll come up and say, Yknow, I wasnt into youse guys, but if I took a chick to your concert you know what Im sayin? I get the whole spectrum. 'This is how it is and this is the God's truth and believe me, this is the way you should do it." So we had coffee, talked about it, and he said, Well, we should get together with Neal and talk about it, and me and Neal and Jon had coffee, and that was kind of the beginning. For in- stance, The Grand Wazoo was almost a jazz big-band record. Its called a band! But it just hasnt happened. Well, disagreements are part of life! I'll keep going and see if I can get anything else out of it." It was what I just said on tape. Is it safe to say that theres not communication between you anymore? Did you have to go to London? And the only one that was consistent was, When the pain gets great enough, youll replace the hip. And I said, Excuse me? I was supposed to talk to him for thirty minutes, but he had a lot to sayabout how he joined the band, about why he left, and about the pride he still takes in the work they did togetherand we ended up talking for almost two hours. I went from playing seven days a week with Mayall to one day a month with Beck. But when I went through Liverpool on a tour with Zappa in 1971, out of all the people I knew in Liverpool, he was the only one who actually turned up backstage to shake my hand and say how well I was playing. AD: Tone quality , more than anything else. AD: The only times we would actually play together was maybe when she would be playing vibes. But I needed to go home. I did not like it, one bit. They'd get a gig somewhere else paying a couple of pounds more, so they would send a substitute to play with me. ManagementHerbie was freakin out, he was lovin it. When somebody says, Weve checked out a few singers, its like your wifes saying, Look, while you were goneI know a few guys, and I just wanna know what youve decided to do, because I need to know. My feeling at that point is very simple: What am I going back to now? But thats how the world judges you. And that I was still able just to play and have at least half of myself there. I've been collecting material for it. AD: I went out with Flo and Eddie and played around the world with them. Are you not allowed to talk about him on the record? Please prove that you're human. I remember by the end of that tour [pause], feeling musically toasty, feeling emotionally toasty, feeling vocally toasty, and, um, [pause] telling the manager, I just dont want to stay out here and keep doing this. Im not bitchin. The less you play, the more they hear. And I had always been a big fan of Jan Hammer, the keyboard player that was playing with John McLaughlin and Mahavishnu Orchestra, and was doing all the Miami Vice themes at that time, the music for the show. Before that, it's hard for me to remember which would be the most interesting. But I didnt realize what we had done together until I stopped. If you crack itits got so much integrity. I really had to let it all go. So I thought, Well, maybe Im not supposed to be there.. AD: There's always the chance. I'm not that disciplined. I mean, he's one of the most underrated yet not underrated because anybody that has heard his playing is respectful, especially drummers.
